Jefferson, Thomas

Jefferson, Thomas
(1743–1826)
   Philosopher and Politician.
Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia, and was educated at the College of William and Mary. He had a distinguished career and was appointed Governor of Virginia in 1779, Minister to France in 1785, Secretary of State in 1790 and Vice President of the new Republic in 1797. He was elected the third President of the United States of America in 1801 and served until 1809. He was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence and is thus remembered for his insistence that ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ are inalienable human rights. He also founded the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and campaigned for religious freedom. In his own religious beliefs he was a Deist and in his edition of the Gospels, The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, he eliminated all references to the miraculous and supernatural. Jefferson’s must be regarded as an influential voice in the founding of the United States and in the shaping of its philosophy of religious liberty for all.
